SUMMER TERM HOMEWORK PROJECT
WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE...
Year 6 will be given their summer term homework project today (23/5/25).
We would like to challenge the children to make a water filter. When they are all in (by Friday 11th July) we will hold a competition in school to see which one/s produce the clearest water.
We have plenty of clear 2L bottles to help get them on their way!
Remembrance Day
On Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th November, Year 6 shared their Remembrance Day assembly with parents, carers, family and children from Y1,2,3,4 and 5.
This year is the 150th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill's birth and Y6 interleaved their performance with his words of inspiration and encouragement that helped the Nation win the war.
Tracy Harding composed two original songs for the assembly. 'High Flight' based on the poem by John Gillespie Magee, took the audience from the fierce battle in the skies during the Battle of Britain to the silence high above the clouds where the plea for war to end could be heard. 'Churchill's Roar' was a powerful song in which the students celebrated his ability to speak to and inspire the Nation.
The Y6 performance was featured in the Tavistock Times.
Well done Y6 for creating a very moving and fitting memorial to all of those brave men and women who have lost their lives in conflict.
HAPPY DIWALI!
As part of their learning about the Hindu faith, Year 6 learnt all about the Festival of Light and made little representations of Divas.
CHRISTMAS PARTY DAY
All of Year 6 had great fun playing games and sitting down and eating together on their party day.
As a Christmas bonus, Billy's mum brought in a ceramic tealight or Christmas decoration for each child. The children were able to glaze them and then Billy's mum fired them and the children could then take them home for Christmas. THANK YOU!
Science in Action
Y6 Investigate LIGHT
As part of our science curriculum we have to design, carry out and evaluate investigations where the children learn how to work scientifically. We use KS3 ready vocabulary such as hypothesis and variable and challenge the children to think and write like scientists
Year 6 were successful in proving that light travels in straight lines by shining a light source through aligned holes to hit a target.
BOOK BROWSING
We have regular browsing sessions in Year 6. This is an important social time where the children have a chance to look at the books on offer for them to read. They have the opportunity to talk to each other about the books that interest them and even recommend a good read to a friend.
LAND YACHTS AHOY!
Thank you to all the parents and carers who were able to come in for our sharing afternoon. The children and our visitors had a great time designing and making land yachts. We explored the basics of aerodynamic design and the children safely used cutting, sawing and gluing resources which showed what a skilled and responsible year group they are.
Over the following two days, both classes had the chance to test their creations and then evaluate their designs.
The Bells Were Ringing for Year 5 and Year 6
Year 5 and 6 were treated to a visit from two of Tavistock's bell ringers. The children listened to a presentation about bells and found out how they are made and about their history. We found out that during the Dissolution of the Monasteries many churches acquired the bells from the monasteries near them - that's why we have so many bells in St Eustachius Church!
Year 6 also had a chance to learn the real meaning of the expression 'Ring the Changes' and demonstrated this with hand bells.
VE DAY
Year 6 joined in with the school and town celebrations for the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
It was made all the more special by Tracy's original song, 'When the Waiting was Over.'
Y5 and Y6 were given the opportunity to be digitally recorded singing this special song and it was released across organisations such as The Lions and Rotary Club, The Tavistock Times and Tavistock town Council too.
Workshops Galore
for Year 6.
Contributing to Tavistock's Celebration of Multiculturalism
Year 6 have been very lucky to have had two workshops this week. The first with Andy Cairns, a local artist and then a poetry workshop, with story-teller, Sara Hurley.
Both artists brought a wealth of experience with them and Year 6 benefitted immensely from the experience.
Andy taught us how to block print using a range of colours and Sara showed us how to create a poem as a class using themes from different stories.
Their work and audio recordings of their poems will be on display in the town library from Monday 16th -Saturday 21st June.
Trip to The Box
We had an interesting and varied experience at The Box in Plymouth. We brought our learning about WW2 to a close through carrying out investigations using primary sources and using them to identify real people who had lived and worked in the City during WW2.
We were also able to kick-start our new learning in Science on Evolution and Inheritance. We had the chance to get to know Mildred the Mammoth and we explored all the other wonders in the pre-history gallery.
DID YOU KNOW....Mammoth remains have been found that prove that they were still alive during the Egyptian period!!
WW2 Homework Project
The Year 6 team were very impressed with the standard and effort put into the homework projects for this term.
Children chose to tell the story of a family member who had been involved in WW2 or to research the story of everyday heroes that they wanted to share (ranging from Dame Vera Lynn to Douglas Bader).
By far the most touching and heart-felt projects were those telling the stories of great and even great-great grandads and grandmothers who played their part in the Second World War.
Thank you for all of your hard work Year 6.
DT FOOD TECHNOLOGY
We had a lot of fun and a lot of funny faces pulled when Year 6 had the chance to taste different fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices from around the world. The next step in our DT journey will be to design and make seasonal recipes ... hearty soup and ginger bread men, here we come!
AUTUMN 2 GARDEN DAY
We had a fun Garden Day on Wednesday!
We built shelters, tasted our soup and created wonderful Christmas cards to send to Ukraine.
Our favourite part was tasting the soup we made in DT! We have included some photos of making the soup and Garden Day below.
SPRING 1 GARDEN DAY
Rafts and Bugs!
We had a beautiful sunny day for our garden day. We began by foraging for sticks to make a stick raft and then spent time, working together building our raft. It was rather lovely to see them all floating down the canal (with varying success!).
Bug hotels were the next activity. The children had gathered materials to make an inviting space for bugs to build a home. Whilst we were building, Mr. Beatty made a fire and the children were treated to a giant marshmallow.
In the afternoon, we created a kaleidoscope of butterflies using a myriad of colours which were inspired by our recent text in English, A Drove of Bullocks by Patrick George.
Spring 2 Garden Day
Year 6 were lucky to enjoy some bright Spring weather for their garden day on 5th March, perfect for their investigation about the Green Man. Different images were explored and stories told before the children collected their own foliage to decorate a Green Man that they created out of clay. These then adorned the trees in the environmental garden.
After hot chocolate and biscuits in the sunshine, the children were shown how to weave a decorative bowl, using a paper plate and coloured wool. Many beautiful and functional bowls resulted.
GARDEN DAY
Summer 1
Quadrats and Trees
Year 6 had a lovely garden day in the sunshine. We used quadrats to explore the plants and insects we can find on our field. We all became very proficient at using keys to identify and the name the surprising variety we found in 1 square metre of our playing field!
If you're not sure what a quadrat is...have a look at the resource below!
In the afternoon, we sketched some of the beautiful trees we are lucky to have in our school grounds. We then painted them in water colour. It was a very calm and sedate afternoon which was much needed after all the hard work everyone put in during the SATs.
ELECTRIFYING SCIENCE!!
Year 6 have been learning all about circuits and how changes to the circuit impact on different components. Ask them what happens when you add more bulbs to a circuit!
They have also been learning how to complete accurate circuit diagrams.
AS I LIVE AND BREATHE!
Did you know that yeast is alive?
Year 6 scientists have proved that yeast can metabolise and is a living micro-organism.
Using a fair test, they experimented with different conditions and 'food' for the yeast. and then made scientific observations.
Placing the different combinations of yeast, warm or cold water and salt or sugar in zip lock bags, Year 6 watched and waited to see what happened.
