British Values

British Values at Tavistock Primary and Nursery School

At Tavistock Primary and Nursery School, we prepare our learners for life in modern Britain by:

  • equipping them to be responsible, respectful and active citizens who contribute positively to society;
  • developing their understanding of fundamental British values;
  • building their understanding and appreciation of diversity;
  • celebrating what we have in common while promoting respect for the different protected characteristics as defined in law.

Our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure that British Values – including equality, respect and diversity – are embedded across all subjects and throughout daily school life.

Democracy

Democracy is an important part of our school culture. Pupils have opportunities to share their views and influence school life through our Pupil Parliament, where group leaders are elected by their peers. Children at Tavistock Primary and Nursery School know that their voices matter and that there is always someone ready to listen. Their ideas and suggestions are valued and help shape the school community.

The Rule of Law

We place a strong emphasis on understanding the rule of law. The importance of laws – whether those that govern the classroom, the school, or the country – is reinforced regularly through daily routines, behaviour expectations and assemblies. Pupils learn why rules exist, how they protect us, the responsibilities that come with them and the consequences when they are broken. Visits from key services such as the Police, Fire Service, and Lifeguards help to deepen pupils’ understanding of rules and safety in the wider community.

Individual Liberty

At Tavistock Primary and Nursery School, pupils are encouraged to make informed choices, knowing they are in a safe and supportive environment. We provide clear boundaries and high-quality education that empower children to develop independence, confidence and self‑awareness. Through lessons in Online Safety, PSHE and SMSC, pupils learn how to exercise their rights and personal freedoms safely. They are encouraged to make choices in their learning, in how they present work, and in the clubs and enrichment opportunities they take part in.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect sits at the heart of our ethos and behaviour expectations. All staff model respectful behaviour, and pupils understand the importance of treating others with kindness and fairness. Respect is embedded through classroom practice, assemblies, our school rules and our wider culture of care. Pupils learn that everyone deserves respect, regardless of differences or beliefs.

Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We promote understanding and tolerance of different faiths, cultures and beliefs by enriching pupils’ knowledge of the diverse society they live in. Through RE, assemblies and discussions, children learn about a range of religions and worldviews. Topics such as prejudice and discrimination are explored sensitively to help pupils recognise and challenge negative attitudes. We welcome visitors from different faith communities and encourage pupils to share their own experiences to deepen collective understanding.
