Tavistock Primary and Nursery School

Our Mission Statement

Inspire and Believe. Discover and Achieve.’

Vision

We are proud to be a community school in the heart of Tavistock using our privileged location to support our learning. We encourage children to take an active role in and love where they live through our established links with businesses and community leaders. We enable our children to do this by hosting community events, opening our school for special events and ensuring our curriculum teaches them about local history and how they can ensure our town continues to flourish.

We are committed to developing the whole child with a focus on children’s individual needs to ensure that every child reaches their full potential through our knowledge and skills curriculum, and we ensure our provision looks after children’s mental health. We aim to ensure that each child feels valued, important and cared for which enhances the children’s drive to learn and be successful.

Our school is a vibrant, inclusive community where every individual feels a true sense of belonging. We strive to create an environment where everyone is valued, supported, and inspired to enjoy their time here and achieve their very best. Our vision is to nurture lifelong learners with curious minds - children who ask questions, explore ideas, and dig beneath the surface to discover more. We aim to foster ambition and high expectations, encouraging both children and adults to believe in themselves and each other as they grow and succeed together. We strive to create a learning community that values and protects the environment, empowering pupils to lead sustainable lives and champion positive change for generations to come.

We are proud to offer a rich variety of opportunities for children to learn and grow – from engaging lessons in the classroom to garden days, educational trips, and a wide range of extra-curricular clubs. Our passion for the arts shines through everything we do. Our vibrant school choir loves performing in the community, and we actively nurture children’s appreciation of artists and their work to support the development of the whole child.

We are committed to helping children achieve their potential through our ‘Skills for Success’ which are:

Resilience – we build children’s resilience in order to help them become absorbed in their learning. They begin to understand when they need a brain break to refresh themselves. They learn to see patterns in things and they can keep going in the face of difficulties.

Self-Belief – we help children develop confidence in their own abilities. They learn to trust themselves, celebrate progress, and believe that effort leads to success. Self-belief gives them the courage to tackle challenges and aim high.

Understanding Yourself – we guide children to recognise their strengths, areas for growth, and emotions. They learn how they learn best and what helps them thrive. Understanding themselves builds self-awareness and empowers them to make positive choices.

Risk-Taking – we encourage children to step out of their comfort zone and try new things. They learn that mistakes are part of learning and that taking risks can lead to exciting discoveries. Risk-taking helps them grow as resilient and adaptable learners.

Responsibility – we teach children to take ownership of their actions and learning. They learn to make thoughtful choices, care for their environment, and consider the impact of what they do. Responsibility helps them grow into respectful and dependable individuals.

Co-operation – we encourage children to understand how to work as a team and when best to work independently. They learn to listen to and respect other views.

Your child’s safety is our top priority. We have strong safeguarding measures in place to ensure every child feels safe, cared for, and supported.
