SEND at Tavistock Primary and Nursery School

At Tavistock Primary and Nursery School, we are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where every child feels valued, safe and able to succeed.

We believe that all pupils should have access to a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum, supported by high-quality teaching and appropriate provision to meet their individual needs.

Our approach to SEND focuses on early identification, inclusive classroom practice and personalised support, enabling all children to take part fully in school life.

Ordinarily Available Inclusive Provision (OAIP)

Our Ordinarily Available Inclusive Provision (OAIP) is guided by the principle:

“Helpful to all, harmful to none, crucial for some.”

This means that many of the strategies used in our classrooms support all pupils while providing essential support for those with additional needs.

Across the school you will see:

  • High-quality, adaptive teaching that responds to pupils’ needs

  • Positive relationships between staff, pupils and families

  • Inclusive classroom practice where diversity is valued

  • Child-centred learning within a broad and ambitious curriculum

  • Calm and supportive learning environments, including visual aids, clear routines and access to quiet spaces where appropriate

  • Open communication and collaboration between school, families and outside services

Targeted SEND Support

If a child needs additional support, we may provide targeted provision such as:

  • Early identification through regular assessment and monitoring

  • Carefully planned intervention programmes

  • Personalised support plans developed with families

  • Access to specialist resources and external professionals

  • Tracking progress to ensure support is effective and impactful

A Whole-School Approach

Supporting pupils with SEND is a shared responsibility across the school.

We ensure this through:

  • Termly pupil progress reviews using a range of evidence

  • Ongoing professional development for staff to support inclusive teaching

  • Close partnership with families and external agencies

At Tavistock Primary and Nursery School, every teacher is a teacher of SEND, and inclusion is central to our school ethos.

Information for Parents and Carers

We believe that working closely with families is essential in supporting children with additional needs.

If you have concerns about your child’s learning, development or wellbeing, we encourage you to:

  1. Speak with your child’s class teacher first, as they know your child best in the classroom.

  2. The class teacher may discuss strategies or support already in place and monitor progress.

  3. If further support is needed, they may involve our SENDCo, Mrs Alice Thompson, to explore additional support or next steps.

Parents and carers are involved at every stage of the process, and we value your knowledge and understanding of your child.

If you would like to discuss SEND provision or have any questions, please contact the school office to arrange a meeting with our SENDCo.
